H: drive

Every student, faculty and staff member has a “home” directory on the file server designated as Drive H. Storing your critical data in your home directory offers the benefits of safety and security. Your files are protected since no one else has access to them, and should you accidentally delete a file, it can be retrieved from tape for up to thirty days.

While your home directory is an excellent storage area, please be aware that there is a finite amount of disk and tape storage space. An equitable distribution would give each faculty and staff member approximately 45 Megabytes of space to store data files. To see how much space your home directory is consuming:

  1. Open “My Computer”
  2. Open “Drive H:”
  3. Choose “Edit”, “Select All” from the pull-down menu.
  4. Right-click anywhere on the selected files/folders.
  5. Choose “Properties”
  6. The resulting window shows you the number of files and folders and the total size in megabytes.

Helpful Guidelines

Here are some guidelines for using your home directory:

  1. Never install software or download games or music to your home directory.
  2. Create folders inside your home directory to help keep your files organized.
  3. Store only critical, work-related files in your home directory.
  4. Periodically discard outdated files.
  5. As an added precaution, save a copy of critical files to your C: drive.
